Au Revoir Ms. Houston!

When I was younger, right about when Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera started, I dreamed to be a singer! Yeah, promise! As in a la Britney with matching song and dance plus cute outfits. Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm probably more excited about the outfits and the traveling that goes with it more than the singing and the dancing.haha Though God showered me with lots of blessings, the talent for singing is, most definitely, not one of them. (Not even my own mother have kind words for my singing voice! It's that bad!) Needless to say, I had an impossible dream!haha But I remember those days when in interviews, Christina (I love her more than Brit Brit!haha) would always make reference to Whitney. Like before she recorded Reflection, she was listening to Whitney Houston in the shower. The song turned out amaze-balls, btw! ;) It became my ultimate "concert in my bedroom" song!haha That and "I turn to you"!

I reckon Christina Aguilera is just one of them... those who's passion for singing is inspired by the incredible talent of Whitney Houston. Though I didn't know of her till the 1990s (Sorry, I was probably in my Mommy's tummy when her career was starting to blossom!haha), I had a good grasp of who she was and how goosebump-inducing is her voice. Her songs are the ultimate Karaoke songs for those which almost instantly become classic audition pieces for aspiring singers.

When I first heard about her death, I have to admit that I wasn't shocked. She's been in and out of rehab, her comeback wasn't much of a success, and she's been getting lots of bad press. But at the back of my mind, I was still rooting for her. I was hoping that she would be the success story just like how she's always been. (Steven Tyler did it, why can't she, right?!)

Right after Sunday mass, I went through my usual routine. Opened the PC and surfed a bit while waiting for the table to be set for lunch. I clicked on Yahoo! and bam, it was the headline "Whitney Houston, dead at 48." Had I heard it somewhere else, I would probably just think it is a bad joke. But Yahoo! is pretty darn credible to report something that's not confirmed. These guys take the veracity of their news seriously.

While part of the world is just curious about what caused her untimely demise, I join the other part which is extremely saddened by her parting but nonetheless grateful to have witnessed a talent like hers. Thank God for youtube, at least those who aren't fortunate enough (i.e. you my future kids) will have a chance to bask on the voice that inspired all the divas of this generation and possibly the next.

I end this post with this video. I've loved this song since high school and it always chokes me up as soon as I hear the first note. Now, it, all the more, fogs my eyes because of what happened! =( RIP Whitney!

PS: How sad it is that we'll never hear that voice live, ever again! At least Heaven has an awesome choir now!
